Be ready for a irreversible transition

You don’t change the world in a day. In the media we often see the intense moments that trigger major changes. These are almost always the drops that make the bucket overflow.

Marnix uses gripping examples to explain the importance of resilience in transitions. After this lecture, you will know exactly what to do to ensure that a system changes in such a way that a small shock is able to trigger an irreversible change.

The significant role of behavioural change in the climate crisis

In addition to technological solutions, behavioral change also plays a major role in the transition to a sustainable society. You can get people to show different behavior on a subconscious level, through nudging. But for lasting change, we respond better to conscious behavior.

In this story, Marnix takes you through the values needed to effectively encourage people to engage in sustainable behavior. He talks about how to create opportunities that allow people to strive for a life of dignity. Because people with a dignified life are more likely to commit to improving society and are better able to accept inevitable change.

What impact do you make with your carreer?

Did you know that the average career has 80,000 hours? A huge opportunity to make an impact. In this personal story, Marnix tells how he went through several setbacks to fight for an economy that generates meaning. Using several leadership lessons, you will get tools to create maximum meaning in your work.

Motivation and Psychology

As a qualified vitality expert, Marnix is an expert in how to motivate people. With this knowledge, he tells your audience in an inspired way how to get a society on board with your transition.

Unfortunately, mostly we see people digging in their heels during a transition. However, with the right solutions and accompanying message, we can get 89% of society on board.

03. About Marnix

“I wanted to create social value, but my focus was on making a career. That had to change.”

Marnix Kluiters is a young entrepreneur who inspires thousands of listeners with his podcast Ecosophy on new economy, energy transition and sustainability.

While he was studying, Marnix prepared for a position at a prestigious accounting firm. He chose his field of study for the sole purpose of making a lot of money. But even then, during the internship, he had doubts. Was he going to do this for the rest of his life? He completed his studies, but deep down he felt miserable. Well, so what? Call it a quarterlife crisis, call it burnout, it was certainly a low point. Complicating matters was the fact that two years earlier he contracted an eye disease, which caused him to rapidly lose his sight.

“I loved skiing, but I didn’t know if it was still possible since I had poor vision. But it turned out there was a whole organization ready to help so that I could whiz down the slopes in Austria. It was wonderful that volunteers were committed to such a meaningful experience. It was a stark contrast to my old job. I also wanted to create social value, like those volunteers did. And if I could ski, pretty much anything was possible, I concluded.”

So, the career as a tax professional “wasn’t going to be it”, but then what? Marnix discovered podcasting when it was just emerging. After experience at other podcast makers, he started his own podcast Ecosophy, in which he speaks weekly to people with a broader view of sustainability, economics, energy transition and philosophy. The insights from over a hundred conversations came together in his book Sustainable Ambition, in which he explains how small but profound steps in your career can make a big difference for a livable world.

04. Purpose

"Small changes in society cause a stable, resilient system to become increasingly fragile."

Marnix Kluiters | Speakers for Good Spreker Duurzaamheid en Leiderschap

"You can try to jump from the basement to the attic, but it's better to take the stairs and go step by step towards your goal. Paradoxically, that's when change happens the fastest."

Marnix Kluiters

Don’t jump straight from the basement to the attic, but take small, meaningful steps to achieve your sustainable goal

Imagine you’re sailing in a canoe on a beautiful lake. The water is clear, the sky is blue, and the weather is lovely. Then you see something lying in the water. Carefully you bend down to look at it. A little further, a little more…. and then, unexpectedly, a frog jumps onto your canoe. Frightened, you lose your balance, the canoe flips over and you tip overboard. Did that frog flip your canoe over? That’s a metaphor Marnix uses to explain the tipping point theory.

“Small changes in society cause a stable, resilient system to become increasingly fragile. Even a small, unexpected disruption can throw the whole system upside down. And that change cannot be reversed: the canoe flips over, your expensive sunglasses are at the bottom of the lake, your wet clothes will have to dry in the sun for a while. That tipping point theory indicates how we deal with the transition to sustainability. There is no doubt in my mind that many canoes will have to tip over in the coming years.”

Consider, for example, the Internet movie Dancing Guy, which features a man dancing nicely by himself at a music festival where the rest of the audience is lying idly in the grass. In no time, a second dancer joins in, and before the video is over, there is a large group dancing and jumping. Someone has to start dancing, or that movement will not occur. But dancer number two is also important, the first follower. He indicates this in lectures: you don’t have to start a movement, you can also join someone else who wants to change something, for example at work.

“The secret is the so-called small wins, small but profound steps that can cause a big change. We often want to initiate a big change, a profound change that really touches on our identity. Because the problems are big. Because we are in a hurry to solve them. Because we want to involve the whole system in the solution, not just the Netherlands, but Europe or even the whole world. But you can’t do it all at once. You can try to jump from the basement to the attic, but it is better to take the stairs and go step by step towards your goal. Paradoxically, that’s when change happens fastest.”

Marnix wrote his book Sustainable Ambition together with Mark Siegenbeek van Heukelom. Their collaboration began on a terrace in the sun when Mark mentioned that his impending fatherhood had made him think more about sustainability. His new baby suddenly brought the year 2100, the abstract year from IPCC reports closer, especially when he looked at his father, who had just turned eighty. Personal leadership, Mark’s expertise, and sustainability, the topic Marnix had been studying for years, have interesting common ground. What if everyone put those 80,000 hours we put into our careers into a sustainable world? For example, by looking for those small wins at work and starting a movement?

“It sometimes seems like people forget their sustainable ideas and views between nine and five. But you can exert your influence to make the world a better place at work, even if you’re not a CEO. We can change systems if we put our careers to work. Think from your circle of influence: what issues do you directly influence?”

Millennials in the prime of their careers, companies stuck with their sustainability policies, corporate environments, they all want to make a positive difference. In lectures, Marnix shares his insights from more than one hundred comprehensive interviews with inspiring experts with a vision of making society more sustainable. His lectures are inspiring, positive, and hopeful, and they immediately spur action.

“To go back to that tipping point theory: we have a lot of small moves to make before canoes start toppling over. I think my generation senses that the old system is finite, and they want to change that. Increase that willingness to change, I argue, within yourself and in the company where you work.”

05. USPs

Why choose Marnix Kluiters for your event?

1. Hopeful

Small changes make a big difference, that’s what I want to convince people. If you hit a golf ball just one millimeter in another direction, it will come two hundred meters further. Thanks to that small wins theory, which was explained to me by Katrien ter Meer, you see that precisely small steps are the fastest way to achieve system-wide and profound change. Everyone can participate in that in their own way.

2. Honest

I loved playing outside as a child. I can’t say that I was concerned with sustainability my whole life. Change hurts and that’s also the honest story. The topic grabbed me when I started looking for how I could create social value in my work. Being inspired by the volunteers who made sure I could ski again, even with a visual impairment, gave me inspiration, as did the documentary Return of Happiness.

3. System change

People want to change, but not be changed. They need autonomy. That’s why I like a concept such as the 15-minute city. The Netherlands is full of cars; we have 19 million parking spaces in this country. But renouncing the car? Oh boy, people find that difficult. In Paris, where the 10-minute city was introduced, people noticed they no longer used the car. No more, then the conclusion. See, that works.

4. Resilient

If you typed my name into Google five years ago, you would only come across posts about my poor eyesight. Now in the search results you’ll mostly find my book and my podcast. I have my own business. Years ago, people wondered what would that be. I thought how I will also find a job, a girlfriend, new friends. That changed when I decided that I shouldn’t stay on the couch but get into action to make sure I had something to say.

5. Philosophical

My podcast Ecosophy combines economics with philosophy and ecology. Ecology is about the knowledge, the knowledge of the house. And economics describes the laws of the house. Philosophy is love of wisdom, a science within which to think about freedom, humanity, justice, and ethics. By bringing these disciplines together, we can strive for an ecosophy, a system in which everyone has the opportunity to live a good life, now and in the future. In my podcast, I’m not only looking for creative answers, but I also want to know whether we’re asking the right questions.

06. For Good Interview

Five questions to:
Marnix Kluiters

Marnix Kluiters Speakers for Good Duurzaamheid Spreker

For Good, what does that mean to you?

“Creating solutions that benefit everyone and make every life better. With my lectures I want to give people the tools to effectively create change, with, by and for other people, both personally, politically, and professionally.”

Do you have an example or inspiration?

“In my podcast I present inspirational interviews with people I look up to, like Katrien Termeer, Jaap Korteweg, Chi Chiu and Aniek Moonen. And I also find Fijke Sijbesma super inspiring. He showed as CEO of DSM that in big business, if you are really different in the game, you can do things differently. Right now, I am inspired by Chi Chiu, director of a knowledge institute for vitality, fitness, and lifestyle. He is a personal trainer, known for his search for the meaning of vitality. And I would love to interview Ben Feringa for my podcast, the Dutch chemist who won a Nobel Prize. I dropped chemistry and physics in high school. Lately I’ve started to delve more into it, precisely because I think many concepts we hear when it comes to sustainability are directly related to chemistry. I want to understand how the accounting of the earth works; you need chemistry for that.”

What makes you happy?

“Feyenoord. From the moment Feyenoord won the UEFA Cup, I was a fan. I saw Pierre van Hooijdonk score, and it was a hit. I’ve had a season ticket for 15 years and I go to the games as much as I can. If Feyenoord is not playing, I enjoy spending time with my girlfriend, with friends, and winter sports, of course.”

Walk the talk: how are you of value?

“Making in-depth content knowledge accessible to a wide audience. I do that through my podcast. I have made my curiosity my business case.”

What can the audience expect from you?

“I want to show everyone how you can initiate big change with small steps. It really can be done! I want to give people that perspective in my lecture. Change is just part of me, I have experienced it myself. I know change processes inside out. The combination of knowledge and experience I drive home with the people who attend my lecture.”
