A flopped tennis player. Master of Law. Manager. Consultant. World cyclist (from Mongolia to India). Coach. Comedian & Keynote Speaker. If anyone can speak of Change it is Joris. He was on it!
It was never Joris’ intention to become a Keynote Speaker. As a teenager, he wanted to become a professional tennis player. He was ranked fifth in the Netherlands and was well on his way. Yet, ten years later, he woke up in an office, in the Corporate Communications department to be precise, literally in the form of a panic attack. He got stuck in e-mails, powerpoint presentations and office jargon.
That’s when he decided to change course. Together with my wife, he cycled from Mongolia to India. On his bike, he had one question with me: if everything is possible, what would I want to do with my life? Keynote Speaker was the answer.
Back in the Netherlands, he delved into Change Strategy. Why do some organizations succeed in their plans, while others do not? He read every book about Change Management and Leadership.
Today Joris is one of the most booked and best-rated speakers in the Netherlands. He speaks from Amsterdam to Malaga. From ABN AMRO to Bol.com and from Education to Healthcare.

Joris Mencke turns the world of leadership upside down.

“As an executive, there's a huge gap you have to bridge, which is: can you get your FULL satisfaction from helping other people look good.”
Do you want to sustainably improve the performance and well-being of your organization? Then you’ve come to the right place. All his keynote presentations boil down to passion, people & principles and answer the question of how to bring these to life in daily practice.
74% of change processes fails. Even though we all know what we should do to succeed. We often know why we should do it and how we should do it. Figuring that out is not that difficult. In fact, the joke is that if you put the strategies of all the organisations in the world side by side, you immediately notice how similar they are:
‘Create a Great Place to Work.’ ‘Act like Teamplayers.’ ‘Deliver Excellent Customer Service’ and ‘Invest in your Future.’ No sensible company would proclaim a strategy that advocates anything else.
‘Yes, no, we are Team Solo and with us, the Customer comes last.’
But, that something makes sense does not make it easy. The real strategy is not figuring out what to do, but in devising ways to ensure that everyone is actually doing what everyone knows they should be doing.
Fortunately, if 74% fail, that leaves 26% of organisations that do succeed. What do they do differently?
In a nutshell, they build their organisation on the pillars Passion, People and Principles, with leaders playing a crucial role.
Passion
Passion is about whether your people get excited about what they are working toward. This happens when, and only when, leaders are able to generate energy and enthusiasm in others.
“As an executive, there’s a huge gap you have to bridge, which is: can you get your FULFILLING from helping other people look good.”
And Joris is not kidding when he says he himself failed that test. Joris would rather be on stage shining himself. He hopes this doesn’t completely disqualify him as a human being, but at least it makes him unqualified as a manager.
People
Many of us find out sooner or later that whatever you want to acquire in life – wealth, fame, respect, a new job, collaborative colleagues, new business and even friendship – comes from other people. Success, however you define it, can only be achieved by convincing someone else – boss, client, colleague – to give you what you want.
“If you treat people as interesting cases, sources of income, as numbers or as F.T.E., these people will in turn treat you back the same way.”
We “must” earn the trust of our stakeholders every day and earn a relationship so that the other person will want to give us what we want.
Principles
Strategies are executed much more effectively when they are prescribed from a moral principle or certain core values, because we believe it is the right thing to do, rather than from practical or tactical considerations.
“Anyone can hang a sign with core values on the wall, but do people feel what they mean?”
If the strategy is to be adhered to and achieved, it must be publicly followed, measured and monitored. Otherwise, you may be fooling yourself. Do you and your organization dare to look in the mirror? With your executives at the forefront? Joris is happy to hold that mirror up to your organization.

1. Passion
Tal Ben-Shahar once said, “Do what you love and love what you do.” Speaking is my favorite thing to do and I approach my profession as a top-class sport: constantly looking for improvements to best fit the challenges of your target audience.
2. People
From the first time I climbed onto a chair to address a crowd in my student days as president of a student soccer club, it was clear to me: First the relationship, then the performance.
3. Principles
My core values are Passion and Craftsmanship, Equality and Connection and Nature. I am a curious person and I want to know how the world, your organization and yourself are put together. Then the solution unfolds by itself.
4. Sincere
I speak from experience about leadership and the consequences it had for me personally to follow only my talent and not my passion as my guide. It is a vulnerable, powerful, sometimes uncomfortable message with which I hold up a mirror to my audience.

Four questions for Joris Mencke
For Good: What does "good" mean to you?
“Creating a world where everyone gets up in the morning inspired, looking forward to the day. In which they feel connected to others and treat each other respectfully, as well as themselves and the planet. After all, we only have one planet, so we need to take good care of it. One of my keynotes is specifically about making a positive impact on the earth: First Aid for Sustainability.”
Do you have an example or inspiration yourself?
“Former Harvard professor David Maister. The first time I watched his speeches online, I thought, Wow, this is exactly what has been swirling in my head for years but which I couldn’t put words to myself. Maister’s mathematical way of looking at human behavior is as tantalizing as it is effective. And the only way to move people is to ask them what they want and show them how to achieve it.”
What do you hope to achieve with your audience?
“For me, a lecture is successful if there is a connection and if I can hold up a mirror to people. I don’t do that in a pedantic, but in a down-to-earth and humorous way. I often get the feedback that they actually apply the principles I teach them in practice. I can’t get a nicer compliment.”
What makes you happy?
“In my work, it makes me happy when I can tailor my insights specifically to an organization because I know that I am making an impact.
I also get incredibly happy that I have created the opportunity to be happy in my personal life as well as in my work. It is a kind of a personal mission to show that that is possible, that you can be successful without working 80 hours a week and barely seeing your family. Success is not success without happiness!“
