01. About Jelle

“Rather have a head full of memories than a house full of stuff.”

What are the steps you can take today to live a happier, healthier and more sustainable life? Jelle Derckx shares his personal story and experiences

Jelle is sitting on the bus, he just got back from his trip around the world. Around him; sounds of notifications and people who are completely absorbed by their smartphones. Social media dominates almost everyone on the bus. But Jelle abstains from it. He doesn’t want to return to this chaotic world, from which he managed to free himself some time ago.

When he was traveling, a roof over his head, water and food, some books and his lover were all he needed. Why on earth would he need more than that?

Let’s rewind to the summer of 2011. Jelle has finished Drama school and has been working as an actor for several years now. But he realizes there is more to it than that. During a difficult period in his life he decides to change course and leaves for Brazil.

While traveling, he reads the book ‘Think Big & Get Rich’ by Napoleon Hill. Not so much the aspect of becoming rich, but the power of personal growth is what captivates him about the book.

I learned that the negative voice I heard so often in my head doesn’t speak the truth. It’s just an inhibiting thought that comes up.

Jelle also learns more about the Brazilian culture, which has a much greater focus on the body than the mind. All those insights and experiences ignite a fire in him to bring back his life to the essence: what is really important? Back in the Netherlands, he decides to continue to live in simplicity and starts cleaning up. His stuff and his thoughts.

He also starts writing about his personal journey and experiences. Therefore, you may already know Jelle from growthinkers, a platform where he and his partner Claire blog about themes such as personal growth, minimalism, sustainability and kids. In 2018, his book ‘Longing for Less’ was released, over 15,000 copies were sold. Jelle is also a frequently requested speaker.

02. Purpose

Show how attractive it can be to live minimalistic and sustainable.

Jelle Derckx - Purpose

"At the end of their lives, no one thinks 'if only I had bought more stuff'."

Jelle Derckx

Living a simpler and more conscious life with less stuff. It provided Jelle with more time and space for the things that really mattered to him, such as personal growth and sustainability

We overconsume and buy products we don’t need to impress people we don’t even like.

Minimalism is often explained as the opposite of materialism. But personally, Jelle perceives minimalism as a much broader concept. One that relates to all aspects of life. It’s not just the things you buy, but also the way you organize your life, fill in your time and spend your energy.

You may even call Jelle’s way of life essentialism. Back to the essence, nothing more and nothing less. This not only benefits our (mental) health, but also the planet, because “taking action against climate change is incredibly urgent”.

By sharing the personal story of his journey with anyone who wants to hear it, he inspires and motivates others to change their lives in a positive way too. How can you take steps today to live happier, healthier and more sustainable?

I grant everyone the insights I gained during my journey. I offer people a peek into my life and work, to demonstrate how to put change into practice. The greatest reward for me is when my story affects people and puts them into action.

Jelle’s message moves people because his story is personal, vulnerable and positive. He tells the painful truth, without pointing the finger. He explains how we can all do better, by giving practical tips. His audience goes home full of enthusiasm and inspiration.

04. For Good Interview

Five questions for:
Jelle Derckx

For Good: what does that mean to you?

“For me, it means inspiring others to change their lives in a positive way. Not only for themselves, but for the world. I believe that everyone has a ‘green heart’ inside and can experience the ‘power of enough’. To light that fire, it is necessary to reveal the – sometimes painful – truth. The urgency of fighting climate change, for example.”

Walk the talk: how are you of value?

“My story appeals to the imagination. People easily relate to it and it provides them with a number of tools that they can immediately put to use. It is in fact a roadmap of my journey, which they can use for their own quest.”

Who is your greatest role model or inspiration?

“Derek Sivers; he once sold his company for 40 million, but only kept 1 million for himself. The other 39 million was donated to charity. To me, he truly is a living example of ‘the power of enough’. He expresses his life lessons very beautifully and compactly in his book ‘How to live’.”

What do you love and what makes you typically Jelle?

“My love for writing, reading, traveling, walking my path, creating, entrepreneurship, making memories, games, family, friends, music, concerts, Amsterdam en lastly my girls.”

What can the audience expect from you?

“My story is powerful because of its vulnerability. I share my own lessons learnt from my quest for personal growth and a more conscious, sustainable life. My goal is achieved when the audience goes home inspired and motivated.”
