02. Keynotes

What is Henk Jan talking about?

How can leadership be both fun and effective? And how do you become the leader you wish you had? Through his experience in recent years as a leadership coach, Henk Jan answers these questions in his fascinating keynotes.

Here you will find some of his keynotes. Customization is always an option, please ask for the possibilities.

Servant leadership

How do you become a servant leader or manager?

The ego sometimes gets in the way of becoming a servant leader. How can you put this aside and start leading from your drives and heart? What does situational leadership mean in practice and why is it so effective? In short, how can you become a servant-leader for your people? This lecture will inspire you and give you useful tools to put into practice tomorrow.

Inclusive leadership

From diverse to inclusive
Inclusiveness and diversity are often mentioned in the same breath, but they are far from the same thing. A diverse workforce says little about inclusiveness in an organization. What is the difference and how can you be a truly inclusive leader? In this lecture, Henk Jan will bring you up to speed and inspire you to take concrete steps within this theme.

Storytellers for leaders and organisations

Stories with impact

To tell a good story, you need to get to the core of your company, and thus to your own core as a leader. What impact do you want to make and why? What is the story behind it and how does it connect with your potential customer? In this lecture on storytelling for leaders and organizations, Henk Jan teaches how to tell stories to make impact.

03. About Henk Jan

“Servant leadership is not a trick, it is a matter of the heart. People can sense the difference flawlessly.”

Henk Jan Kamsteeg is a journalist, storyteller, and leadership expert. His books and lectures are about servant and inclusive leadership. He is also committed to ending modern slavery.

Shouting from the boardroom could be heard from the canteen. This was followed by the resignation of one of the editors who left the room with a flushed face.  At that point, the shouting from top to bottom was not yet a reason for Henk Jan Kamsteeg not to work for the company. But the tirade turned out to be not incidental. Henk Jan’s desire was born, to invest in servant leadership.

Henk Jan studied journalism and worked for various magazines for over 16 years.  As a journalist, he interviewed countless interesting visionaries about leadership and, as an editor, read all their books. For example, he interviewed Ken Blanchard, Stephen Covey, and Ben Tiggelaar.

He said, “I was like a kid in a candy store. I was only too happy to absorb all that knowledge and experience,”.

After reading a book by an interesting author on narcissism in leadership he really realized what was going wrong in the publishing house where he worked. Inspired by this and other views on modern leadership, he wrote his first book ‘Servant Leadership’, followed by ‘The Power of the Compliment’, ‘Inclusive Leadership’, ‘Pure Profit’ and many more.

In 2012, he founded Proistamenos Kamsteeg Leadership Company, which teaches executives what servant leadership is and coaches them in their (self)leadership.

It was a special period for Henk Jan, because in 2012 he also took a different path by working for International Justice Mission Netherlands., initially as Communications and Marketing Manager and later as Manager Storytelling and Storyteller. IJM is an organization fighting against poverty, ‘modern’ slavery, human trafficking, and child abuse worldwide. This initiated another book: ‘A plague of violence’, a shocking, harrowing and unfortunately realistic story about modern slavery.

Henk Jan regularly appears on stage and lectures on the various themes and refers to his books, namely servant and inclusive leadership and storytelling for leaders and executives.

04. Purpose

"Your mission is about more than profit and growth; it's about leaving something beautiful on this earth."

"Become the manager you wish you had."

Henk Jan Kamsteeg

Ideals, values, and a new form of leadership

If you ask Henk Jan, every world religion or philosophy has something in common, namely that we should be good to others. That is what we can all agree on although our methods may differ. That is why, according to him, servant leadership is the only way to be a good leader or manager. He says, “And that is anything but soft, but all the more effective”, soft is incorrectly assumed at times by traditional leaders.

Servant leadership starts with the question: ‘Am I willing and intrinsically motivated to invest in others?’ As Henk Jan himself says:

“Servant leadership is not a trick; it is a heartfelt thing. People sense the difference unerringly.”

Henk Jan also believes that a servant leader must know and convey his own story. A good dose of storytelling is therefore indispensable as far as he is concerned.

“Your story is about what you stand for and what you believe in. It can be about a passion you have, a holy rage, a fire that is burning in you.”

An example of such a holy rage from Henk Jan’s own life is the reason he made a case for International Justice Mission Netherlands. A harrowing story:

“I read a story in IJM’s mission book about a staff member who took part in a liberation operation in Cambodia. He went undercover in a brothel. Soon he was ‘offered’ a five-year-old girl. At the time I read this story, my own daughter was sitting next to me playing with her ‘My Little Ponies’ in the living room – safe. That affected me immensely. So, when a vacancy became available at IJM, I did not hesitate for a moment; this is what I want to work for!”

Henk Jan hopes to trigger something in leaders and executives and inspire them to also start leading from their story, to serve their people and thus reach a higher purpose in a common mission.

“That mission is not about more profit, more growth. It’s about all of us leaving something beautiful on this earth.”

Moreover, that is also what Henk Jan wants to achieve with his lectures, impact! Ensuring that as many people as possible flip a switch so that they dare to choose for their ideals, values, and a new form of leadership: serving and inclusive.

06. For Good Interview

Four questions for:
Henk Jan Kamsteeg

For Good: What does 'good' mean to you?

“Not just being self-serving but serving each other. Instead of causing frustration, we can create a world where we serve others and nature, instead of exploiting them to benefit ourselves. I believe we can do that.”

Walk the Talk: How are you of value?

“Besides writing and speaking, I am also active for International Justice Mission to fight for justice as a storyteller and as an informal leader. Servant leadership can be attractive in practice, but it’s really a matter of making the right choices. For the other. The higher purpose. For the long term. For the future.

I inspire the audience, tell them an authentic story, and give them practical tools to start servant leadership for tomorrow. ‘From their heart, not as a trick.”

Do you have an example or inspiration yourself?

“Everyone knows the image of that boy who stood in the middle of the road in front of a moving tank. I don’t know what happened to him, but I find it fascinating that he literally stood up for his values, at the risk of his life, for something he believed in. Sometimes when I run into difficulties, I think of that boy. If he dared to stand in front of a tank, why shouldn’t I speak out from my safe place?”

But there are also plenty of inspirations closer to home. My mother not only kept everything running at home, but she also took care of the whole neighborhood, and she still does at the age of 80. If someone was sick, she got on her bike and visited them. This was no better example of ‘serving’ others.

In terms of servant leadership, I cannot say other than that the director of International Justice Mission is the best. She could have made a lot more money with her education and talent for a big corporate, but she chose to dedicate herself to do good.”

What makes you happy?

“My wife and three daughters, PSV and also my work of course. I also really like to keep reading, learning, and growing myself. The more knowledge you gain, the better you can connect that knowledge to each other, which is a beautiful thing to experience. Reading is and will remain an important part of my life. So as a jury member for ‘Management Book of the Year’, I really fell head over heels.”
