“Smart technology is already here, now it’s time for smart users.”
Aaron Mirck is a writer, poet, entrepreneur, (TedX) speaker and tech philosopher who advocates for more offline attention
With a bachelor in Dutch and a master’s degree in political science, Aaron started his career as a journalist. Soon followed a foray into what he himself calls; the ‘dark side of journalism’, referring to the world of PR, information and government campaigns. He was involved in the launch of NIX18, donor week and worked for tech companies such as Equinix, Deezer and Inner Circle. He was also CEO/founder of Presscloud, a marketing-tech startup.
In 2021, he decided to change course as he became increasingly concerned about the impact of technology on our lives, society and the way we work. Ever since, he has been writing books and opinion pieces on technology and giving lectures, keynotes and workshops to ensure that there is not only smart technology, but also smart users.

“We must continue to critically examine whether technology is still serving society.”

Aaron Mirck argues for AI literacy
Convenience serves mankind, everything is at our fingertips with just one swipe and delivered to your front door in no time, we communicate more and more online and information spreads at lightning speed. But how good is this for the planet, for our social lives and our mental health? Although, according to Aaron Mirck, it is not as black and white as “online bad, offline good”, he does see how many aspects of our lives suffer considerably from the influence of technology.
With humor and engaging examples, Aaron manages to challenge his audience to think critically about digital ethics and our use of technology. He treats complex topics with a light-hearted tone, making you think about your own role in this digital world.
Another important insight is that digitalization is often linked to improvements in our productivity and thus, among other things, prosperity. Yet over the past 10 to 15 years, the productivity and prosperity of our society has not grown in proportion to the development of technology.
But no matter where you look, AI has taken root in our concepts and everyday lives. Countless students use tools like ChatGPT for homework, but how should education deal with generative AI? In addition, Aaron is concerned with the ambiguous impact of AI on the climate crisis. While some see AI as a solution to environmental problems, others are concerned about the significant carbon emissions from AI tools.
Thus, he explores the reality behind AI’s climate impact, as well as concerns about copyright, bias, privacy, and working conditions within companies and the transitions they find themselves in.
How do you handle AI ethically, and what are the guidelines for digital etiquette in this digital day and age? Whether you are looking for an energizer at the beginning of the day or a perfect opening to the function, Aaron Mirck provides customization, humor and lots of interaction.

Four questions for:
Aaron Mirck

For Good: what does that mean to you?
“Doing good, making the world a better place, not for the money, but for the people. Everything of value is defenseless. Optimism is a duty. Technology is too important to leave to techies. The future is a verb, you have a say in it.
Every day I write down three things I’m grateful for; if I gave a lecture and someone comments that I touched them, made them look at the world differently or changed their habits, that’s at the top of my list that day!”
Every day I write down three things I’m grateful for; if I gave a lecture and someone comments that I touched them, made them look at the world differently or changed their habits, that’s at the top of my list that day!”
Walk the Talk: what is your added value?
“I am of value by holding a mirror up to people. Thanks to humor, I get away with a lot. I provide surprise, inspiration and motivation to have people look differently at everyday technology and the way we work with it. I tell that story with equal ease – and perhaps even more pleasure – to a group of techies or marketers who are doing everything they can to keep us addicted to digital technology. It’s fun when it chafes; resistance is there to be overcome.”
Who is your greatest role model or inspiration?
“On the one hand, that’s Johann Hari, who has written a lot of meaningful and inspiring things about how we’re losing our focus on digital technology. His book ‘Stolen Focus’ is my inspiration for much of what I do. In addition, I love Karel van het Reve. Grunberg wrote that Van het Reve taught him how to think (and we shouldn’t call him God more than three times a year, because that would be pathetic). I concur. He dares to take the cudgel, to defend exciting propositions and encourages one to be critical.”
What can the audience expect from you?
“To combine just a few apparent contradictions: substance as well as humor, philosophical insights that are not too abstract, and a critical look at how we interact with technology without getting creepy.”
