01. About Mirjam

“Sustainability is not rocket science and even fun! Only the real change is not in technology, but in people.”

Mirjam van Laarhoven is a sustainability strategist and inspires and activates organizations in the field of sustainability in the broadest sense of the word, both ecologically and socially. This sustainability goes beyond plastic soup, solar panels and reducing inequality.

Mirjam from Brabant was sometimes called ‘Mother Nature’ as a child.  She was not so consciously concerned at that time with sustainability. She grew up in a village in Brabant on the border of Belgium and Limburg, where her feeling for technology in particular was greatly stimulated.

“Our dad became paralyzed on the left side due to a stroke, but he was still very technical and always thought in solutions and possibilities. He almost never threw anything away, because he could make something new out of anything. I used to be his second right hand.”

So, it was no surprise to many that Mirjam went on to study mechanical engineering at Eindhoven University of Technology, where she completed a first-grade physics teacher training program.

After her studies, Mirjam went to work as a teacher at Fontys and at the same time as a design engineer at Philips, where she worked on various projects around circularity – a term she had never heard of until then, even though she was taught these principles – don’t throw anything away and reuse – from an early age.

“On the bike to my job interview, I quickly looked up what circular economy meant. During the interview it really began to dawn on me, and we talked about this for almost an hour. I found it fascinating; such a brilliant and clever system, how had I never heard of it before?”

This was the closest Mirjam ever came to an “aha-erlebnis,” (aha moment) because unconsciously she had always lived by the values that are important in the circular economy. Consequently, she saw opportunities and possibilities to innovate and improve everywhere. Still, convincing others proved not so easy. “I had to nag quite a bit within projects to get something done”. In the role of Circular Economy Design Strategist at Philips, she noticed that sustainability was mainly approached from a commercial point of view and with a shabby image that would soon blow over, something Mirjam did not support.

She left corporate and in 2018 she started giving lectures, trainings and workshops focused on sustainability under the banner of her own company SeDGe (Share, Do & Guide sustainability with the SDGs). She also became a sustainability manager in an SME organization. From 2024, Mirjam will continue with SeDGe as SOW Sustainability, helping companies to become more sustainable together with their employees. In her work, lectures, and workshops, Mirjam uses her teaching skills and her experience among other things for design thinking and hands-on sustainability strategy development.

Her directness creates instant action, partly due to her disarming cheerfulness, energy and unmistakable Brabant accent. This makes Mirjam the keynote speaker of choice when you really want to get your organization in motion and when you are just looking for a fun interpretation of your program. Her lectures and workshops are always interactive, energetic, dynamic and never boring!

02. Purpose

“I want to be proud of what I do now and in 15 years I want to be able to say to my children that I did everything I could.”

“I bring a lot of energy, (accidental) bad jokes and an honest story, even if sometimes it isn't the prettiest story.”

Mirjam van Laarhoven

Sustainability is not rocket science

When it comes to important things that are close to her heart – such as a sustainable future – Mirjam’s thinking can be described as black and white. Once she knows something, there is no turning back. Then the wheels start turning and “doing it the way we’ve always done it” is no longer an option.

“Once you know something, you can’t ‘not know’ it. Then I have to do something with that.”

Yet she is also aware that you can’t tackle everything at once. For example, she sometimes felt bad about not succeeding in eating 100% vegan. Until she realized that she could make much more impact if she could “get 1 person to eat less meat 1 day a week every week. And that by normalizing this, she could inspire even more people.

She now applies this insight in her work and lectures. She encourages companies to invest mainly in sustainability measures that make a lot of impact; this is different for each company. She also emphasizes how important it is not to impose sustainability, but to get employees in an organization excited.

“Sustainability is not rocket science and can even be fun. Everything can be solved with technology, but the real change is in the people. So do it together with your people too, they will become happier employees as well!”

When Mirjam became a mother in 2021, and a second child in 2023, she realized more and more how much her children held up a mirror to her.

“The other day I said to my son, ‘Careful or the remote will break,’ to which he replied, ‘Then we’ll buy a new one anyway.’ That is at odds with what I wanted to give them, so I was quite shocked by this reaction. It also makes me very keen to think about sustainability and what children learn in education and care.”

As a mother of a boy and a girl, as a woman in engineering and as the daughter of the first working mother in her neighborhood, Mirjam also feels closely connected to the topic of gender equality. Something we still haven’t achieved in our modern society today.

“Just like my mother did by going to work, I believe it is possible to break things in one generation, and let the new generation grow up with a ‘different normal.’ In 10 years at least, I want to be able to say that I did everything I could to make it better.”

Why invite Mirjam to speak at your event?

1. Authentic

As authentic as Mirjam is, she also encourages companies and organizations to act authentically. “Sustainability is a people business and making a real impact lies in doing the right thing or the ‘better’ thing collectively. If you focus on low hanging fruit – solar panels for example – then you are not really making an impact. At most you will do ‘less badly’. So yes, that’s a nice start but for real impact you have to continue after that.”

2. Engineering

With a study background and career in engineering, Mirjam knows the ins and outs, the objections and opportunities in this industry when it comes to circularity.

3. Direct

Mirjam recognizes greenwashing and is straight to the point when she encounters it. Yet she manages to bring this in an energetic and upbeat way, so it’s not a ‘finger-pointing show’ but she challenges you to think outside the box. “Fine if organizations start with ‘greenwashing,’ but sooner or later they will really have to get going because customers and public opinion will puncture it.”

4. Interactive

Mirjam thinks and talks fast. She brings a boundless energy and, in her own words, “maybe bad jokes” to the stage, making her very approachable and never boring to listen to. But if you are looking for a traditional narrator-hearer situation, you haven’t come to the right place with Mirjam. Her lectures and workshops are packed with interactive working methods that will keep you constantly on the edge of your seat.

5. Practical

Simply put, Mirjam isn’t afraid to roll up her sleeves. With a ‘get cracking and take the bull by the horns’-mentality she truly knows: with even the smallest first step you take, an impact can already be made. And it can be the first to many subsequent steps. And that has another advantage: “Start with sustainability in an accessible way that is fun, then it tastes like more!”.

Equal opportunities: The road to gender equality in practice

Sustainability and gender equality go hand in hand, yet both are not yet a fact, even though gender equality is also part of the SDGs. It’s in the pay gap and opportunity inequality, among other things, but also in trivial-seeming details like language. “When we say, ‘come on boys,’ we mean girls too, but it does say something about our system in which men are still leading.” With her background in engineering and a mother who went to work when it was unusual, gender equality is close to Mirjam’s heart. In this keynote she explains what is at stake and how we can achieve this.

05. For Good Interview

Interview with Mirjam van Laarhoven

What is the difference between your work and what a sustainability manager does?

“I used to be a sustainability manager and that constant ‘peddling’ and convincing in a singular organization is not something that energizes me. I enjoy inspiring and activating organizations to really get going. I see that my method, in which we make employees enthusiastic, really works. No matter which company or industry, people always get stimulated. If you do what you love, you automatically make more impact.”

For Good: What does 'good' mean to you?

“A better term for me would be ‘For better,’ because although it’s not perfect yet, the important thing is that there is movement. I try to plant as many seeds as I can and keep expanding my reach. Even if I only got them thinking, or those companies and organizations are only doing a piece of what we discussed, that’s already a win. Once an organization or person has taken a step, the next one will quickly follow. For me personally, ‘good’ is being part of that movement and helping others take steps forward.”

Walk the talk: how are you of value?

“I make the topic of sustainability fun and discussable. I am direct, but not in a judgmental way. I am honest about the fact that there is still a lot of work to be done, but also realistic about the speed of change and society. Perhaps the very best thing would be for everyone to live in a cabin on the moor, but that is not realistic. I stress that we can let go of perfection, but not our responsibility.”

Do you have any examples or inspirations of your own?

“Several! First of all, my mother, the first woman around me at that time who had a job in addition to her family. And of course, my father, who taught me to always think in opportunities and possibilities for improvement, whatever your obstacles.

From a business perspective, I find Jan Rotmans very inspiring. He makes science accessible because he sees it as his moral obligation. I identify with his view: I know something important, so I have to share it with a wider audience.”
