01. About Miranda

“Would your great-grandchild be proud of the decision you make today?”

Miranda is a writer, social innovator and entrepreneur. She speaks about inclusion and leadership for a bright future – for us and the coming generations. How do you include and represent the most beautiful possible future?

Creating meaningful experiences, in projects that leave a positive imprint on the world; this is   in Miranda’s blood and what she has been engaged in for many years, as a project and event manager, consultant, trainer, coordinator. The bottom line is that she almost always has a facilitating role. After the first ten years of her career, she increasingly felt the need to be more involved with content, and in doing so make a positive contribution to the world.

She decided to pursue a master’s degree in Strategic Leadership towards Sustainability in Sweden. She realized that we are all heading for a ravine at dizzying speed, the greatest collective challenge ever! But how can we make the gigantic turnaround necessary to avert this danger?

She learned throughout her training and beyond all about dialogue and collective transformations, about moving in a new direction together, and how to help people by visualizing it. One such way, now completely integrated into Miranda’s way of thinking and acting, is seven-generation thinking.

“Overwhelming people with facts and ‘rocket science’ usually doesn’t work.  Put yourself in ‘the shoes’ of your grandchildren and great-grandchildren. That makes the future, and the problems future generations have to deal with tangible and palpable.”

Miranda is author of the upcoming book “How to include and represent the brightest possible future,”. She was at the forefront of “Ministry of the Future” and is a social innovator at “Lab Future Generations. With her company ‘Our Kids Future,’ she introduced organizations such as municipalities, companies, and schools to seventh generation thinking. She guides them in answering questions such as: what does the future look like for a city and for people who (will) live on this planet? And when is a company future-proof? Miranda also introduces you to dialogue and seventh-generation design in her lectures.

During her lectures, Miranda takes you on a personal time-travel journey into your past, present and future, where the perspectives of your ancestors and future great-grandchildren are an important part.

02. Purpose

"It is important to have a physical person at the table who represents the voice of future generations."

Miranda Willems | Speakers for Good

"The shoes of my future great-grandchild 'Mees' remind me to be a good ancestor."

Miranda Willems

How do you become a good ancestor?

Around the time of her graduation, Miranda found herself on an estate in England, where she first heard about the “seventh-generation principle” in a community. Looking back at the three generations ahead and four generations ahead created more peace, space, and perspective, she observed.

The term “cathedral thinking” visualizes this perspective exactly. Thinking and doing for seven generations ahead.

“Cathedral thinking is based on the time when cathedrals – huge structures – were built. That took over a hundred years, and so the architects and the people who masoned the first bricks would never see the end result. So, it was not about them, but about leaving something valuable behind for future generations.”

She believes we do to little, both looking back and ahead, learning from previous generations, and about the effect on future generations, and neither do governments and businesses. Miranda argues for a “seat at the table” for future generations. She experiences sometimes that place is already there, but it is not much more than an empty chair that should represent this generation.

“It’s important to have someone physically sitting there representing that voice. For example, in Finland there is a ‘Counsel of the future,’ where someone sits who really looks at challenges and who actively participates in transformative dialogue.”

Why is this so important? Science and facts are important, but for many people this is rocket science. Her goal is to get people in companies and governments to see that we are creating the future ourselves, and that this is the future our children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren.

“What works really well is making your future great-grandchild a character. For example, mine is named ‘M,’ and I even have a pair of children’s shoes in my office, constantly reminding me that the decisions I make today will affect this child in the future.”

The seventh-generation concept is a powerful tool that challenges you to flip your current thinking pattern and develop a new mindset. A mindset that is crucial for a sustainable and hopeful future.

In her lectures, trainings and workshops, Miranda lets you experience this power and inspires you to be “a good ancestor” 7 generations ahead! What kind of good ancestor do you want to be?

In action for the most brightest future

Inclusion and representation of future generations

For a bright future, we need to start being good ancestors now. That means considering the interests and well-being of future generations. But how do you start doing that from one day to the next? With seven-generation design, Miranda inspires you and shares practical tools that facilitate embedding, so that you look further ahead in a different way your work and life. What kind of good ancestor do you want to be today for your great-grandchild in 2050-2100?

Future thinking from today

For the bright future yet to come

What exactly does Broad Prosperity mean? And how can you embed and secure it in your policies – from short-term to long-term thinking? This keynote emphasizes that Broad Prosperity is not a ten-year plan but should be part of a long-term vision in which we include the interests of future generations in decision-making.

05. For Good Interview

Questions for Miranda Willems

How do you do that; include the well-being of future generations in decisions that are sustainable?

“The first step is to put yourself in their shoes and imagine their perspective. How would they – with all the issues in their time – look back on the decisions you are making now? The second step is to take that responsibility as well. As people, but also governments and businesses, we need to give future generations a voice and factor their interests into our decisions.”

For Good: What does 'good' mean to you?

“For me, ‘good’ means the answer to the question: would my great-grandchild be proud of the decisions I make today? After all, for a good future, there is nothing more beautiful and important than being good ancestors together. The same goes for leaders; they have an important one to fulfill. I believe that a transformation of perspective can create transformational sustainability. This requires a transformative, helping narrative, and I offer that with seven-generation thinking, for example, the Square Council or the Future Council. Just in your neighborhood.”

Do you have an example or source of inspiration?

“Those are definitely my own parents and grandparents. I was raised with a lot of love, strength, and fire. My grandparents were my cradle; open, free, and responsible people who taught me to look at the world my way with their wisdom. I visited their home a lot and we had a very close relationship, which is still alive in me. Their loving gaze and attitude still give me a sense of security and calm. They inspire me to be a good ancestor too.”

What do you hope to achieve with your audience?

“What I am noticing in practice now is that there seems to be a greater focus on future prospects. Everyone is curious, understands the concept and is enthusiastic. The head and heart are there, but the hands – the exact form and execution – are often still not there. There is movement, but what is missing is representation and inclusion. For example, through ‘independent’ regulators, laws and regulations and ourselves – committed – ‘we can ensure that something actually changes.

So, it’s good that the attention is there, but it’s not about me. I want to make people aware, inspire them in the first place, but ultimately, of course, I want them to move. Everyone! Bottom-up and top-down – in the transition space in the middle – all kinds of things are already being tried, but they don’t find each other in the middle. Through that M difference , for example, ToekomstRaad and Plekberaad,  I hope to inspire my audience with practical examples, (inter)national movements and cases for – legal – inclusion and representation.”

  • “The perspective of 7 generations is very interesting! It is extremely valuable to think about where and with what people will be happy and prosperous then. Thinking about the future gives many options, because the world could potentially look completely different as well. At the Province of South Holland (PZH), we often look ahead a maximum of 10 years, but then you can very easily get stuck in old and existing problems and solutions. “It takes a lot of courage to let go of ‘business as usual’. You automatically encounter yourself as a person in context. There has to be room for that. Future thinking and representation for the long-term future is a nice find.” – Province of Zuid-Holland
