01. About Juliëtte

“The only limitation is our imagination – let’s dream and play like children again”

Juliëtte Schraauwers is an award-winning entrepreneur, visionary and Childhood Changemaker. She is a passionate speaker on holistic living, where education plays a crucial role.

As a child, Juliëtte found it difficult to adjust at school. She was labeled with dyslexia at an early age and was treated as if she had a disability. But in her free hours after school and homework, she spent all her time in her favorite classroom: outdoors, where she felt a strong connection. This stimulated her creative, solution-oriented, and entrepreneurial spirit. Here she could be herself, and could questions like, “Why do we flush drinking water down the toilet?”, “Why do we eat animals?” and “Why do companies only think about short-term impact?”.

Her quest for a better world began at a young age, for instance when she encouraged her neighbor’s children to rescue snails from the sidewalk after a heavy rain or by collecting 1,500 guilders with classmates for victims of an earthquake in Turkey.

Juliëtte managed to turn her “handicap” into a super strength and chose a creative Mbo education, followed by a HBO education at the Design Academy in Eindhoven. Her vision for a better world and her creativity are the driving forces behind her life path. She has founded several companies that contribute to a regenerative world and with connection to ourselves and nature; such as branding agency THE NOW, holistic training institute RE: SCHOOL and Health Spring – where people can optimize their health through high-quality laboratory research. And she and her partner built a sustainable home with an ecological and edible garden.

Juliëtte’s journey began with the belief that our current way of life does not fit with who we really are, and that education is the key to systemic change. Her experience with education has remained unchanged since her own school days, and that motivates her even more. Her ability to inspire and encourage others to build a better world together has already inspired over 100,000 people worldwide, thanks in part to her TEDx “What I wish I learned in school.” and her daily inspiration on social media.

Juliëtte recently became a mother, which further strengthened her vision and mission to bring change to children’s lives. Motherhood deepened her knowledge and expanded her horizons. She sees it as an ultimate life project to have a little soul by her side who loves her unconditionally. It allows her to give her child the freedom to discover himself, follow his passions and nurture his innate connection to the natural world.

02. Purpose

"What we teach our children now defines what our future will look like."

"When we change childhood, we change the world."

Julliëtte Schraauwers

Marvel, change and renew

The average Dutch adult consumes 3.3 Earths per year and children are taught to live far beyond the carrying capacity of the earth. While we are not experiencing more happiness and health in the long run, we have ingrained in ourselves the belief that this is the life we want because we have learned it that way. We think it is normal that children are given only 1m2 of space in schools. They sit still all day; have to do what we ask and there is only one correct answer. We have forgotten what it means to be a child and in doing so deny children the freedom to learn from life’s magic, movement, discovery, and play. And yet we are amazed that there is an entire generation that has lost touch with itself and nature. This disconnect begins as early as education, notes Juliette.

“The word ‘school’ is derived from the Ancient Greek ‘scholé’ meaning ‘leisure’ and the word ‘education’ means ‘to bring out’. We should bring these origins back into education. We learn most by playing and following our natural curiosity. Learning is a byproduct of play.

Like Juliëtte herself, many other adults see that the changing world calls for “unlearning” old ideas. This does not mean losing knowledge, but daring to wonder, change and innovate again.

Holistic education is a prerequisite for a healthy future for our children. Juliette asks the question, “How can we be a better ancestor for our children? By wanting to perpetuate the problem or by being part of the solution?” – Only we can break the vicious cycle.

“The world is changing, and in 20 years we will need new skills for jobs we don’t know today.”

With her lectures, Juliëtte aims to inspire parents and education professionals and bring ReGeneration of holistic thinkers and doers to fruition, with an emphasis on balancing social, ecological, and economic awareness. In her lectures, she weaves together new scientific insights and ancient, timeless wisdom such as Ayurveda.

Children learn to reconnect with themselves, others and the earth and maintain and nurture this connection. They learn to remain agile and resilient in a world that is constantly changing. Creating a world where creativity, solution-oriented thinking, and entrepreneurship with respect for nature and their own nature, will ensure a regenerative future where they will be an integral part.

Since Juliëtte became a mother, her holistic vision has deepened. She realizes that the picture so far has always been that children learn from us, but perhaps we can learn much more from children. Her talks focus on redesigning our lives, environment, and education for a positive future; for ourselves, our children, and the future 7 generations.

Holistic Education

What I wish I learned in school

What and how we learn determines how we live; I have experienced that first hand. I am here to share a new story that connects learning with life. Education plays a key role in this and that is why I believe in a new foundation for the school system, consisting of the pillars; social, ecological, and economic. When these are in balance, we help children grow up balanced and in touch with themselves and nature. This is essential to create a good future, for them and future generations. As a visionary and founder of NOWSCHOOL, among others, I share my insights into education and inspire change.

Holistic living

With self-awareness, empathy, and resilience

From nutrition to daily routines, I am fascinated by the art of holistic living. By consciously choosing healthy habits and eating patterns, I strive for a balanced and thriving lifestyle that promotes our physical, mental, and emotional well-being. In addition, I believe in the importance of holistic parenting, where our children blossom into holistic thinkers and doers. Mothers are often unconsciously the changemakers at home: they determine what a child eats, what clothes they wear, what time they go to bed and what school or daycare they go. This is not only about providing secure attachment, but also about fostering self-awareness, empathy, and resilience in connection with oneself, others, and the earth.

Holistic environment

Holistic environment

Our environment has a profound impact on our well-being and our connection to the world around us. Therefore, I strive to create an environment that is in harmony with nature, whether it is in our homes, gardens, or communities or not. For example, together with my partner, I built a healthy and (virtually) ecological house with an edible garden on a former chalet park which was given  residential use. Less stuff, less possession in exchange for more experience and more enjoyment.

04. For Good Interview

Four questions for Juliëtte Schraauwers

Juliëtte Schraauwers | Speakers for Good

For Good: What does "good" mean to you?

“That we do everything we can to better pass on the earth to the next generations; after all, we are borrowing the earth from our children. This will only succeed if we give growing and future generations a voice, so that we actually start thinking and acting long term.”

Walk the talk: how are you of value?

“Every year 135 million babies are born. Babies who grow up to be toddlers, teens, and adults. All 135 million children born each year deserve to grow up on a sustainable and tenable earth. I give voice to these and future generations because they need to be heard in all our boardroom meetings, business plans and business models. Directly or indirectly, everything we do has an impact on the next generation. It’s up to us to contribute positively to this, and that’s what I want to inspire people to do.”

Do you have an example or source of inspiration?

“Mother Earth. That probably sounds like a cliché. But all the lessons we should learn in school, we can learn from nature. Nature is so incredibly intelligent and so wise. For all the world’s problems, nature has long since come up with a solution. It is up to us to observe her better and learn from her. The world is thus my classroom and every day I am so immensely amazed as a child what all there is to learn from nature.”

What makes you happy?

“Planting seeds, in every way possible. Literally, by working in my vegetable garden, with my baby there in the baby carrier. But also, by speaking in front of groups, taking them along in the change. Even what’s more beautiful is to hear that they actually implement it. Furthermore, every day I enjoy the adventures with my little man.”
