2. Keynotes

What is Ariane talking about?

Is your organisation contributing to the problems or the solution around sustainability and social impact? Ariane takes you on a journey into your organisation with this question in mind and, from her years of experience as a sustainability consultant, shares inspiring insights during her fascinating lectures.

Here you will find some of her keynotes. Customization is always an option, please ask for the possibilities.

Working together on business for good

Actually, we all know it. Global warming, plastic soup, nitrogen. And in the social field; poverty, polarization, loneliness. Ask yourself: does my organization contribute to these problems or to the solution?  The honest answer is probably not the one you want to hear. This can and should be different. This keynote will give you insights and tools on how to make your organization an impact organization.

Building from the future

Many organizations hire expensive consultants to predict the future. What will the market do, what are the trends and analyses and how big can our market share become? In doing so, they assume that the future will happen to us. Impact organizations do this differently. They do not wait for the future but build the future themselves. This starts with a very clear dream of what the future should look like, and then a concrete plan on how to achieve this future. In this keynote, I will tell you how.

Leaders for Good

When you ask people about their best team experience, you often get the same answers back. You have a common goal, everyone has a clear role, everyone is equal, gets and gives trust and there is positive interaction. Usually, people think of an athletic experience or an active holiday. Rarely is work seen as the best team experience. How can you design the work environment to create the best team experiences there too? I share this with you in the keynote ‘Leaders for Good’.

The power of inspiration

14 years of research into inspiration (www.inspirerende40.nl) have given us a lot of insights. Using catchy examples, I can tell you how you can harness the mechanisms of inspiration for your organization. After all, inspired employees are more than twice as productive as satisfied employees (let alone dissatisfied employees…) No operational excellence program can compete with that!

Willing and able - the power of mindset

Until I got cancer, I always thought I was blessed with a strong body, and that that was the reason I always kept going, even when I didn’t feel so good. When I had to decide to take preventive chemotherapy, I decided that this was not going to have an impact on my life. And it did. With a strict diet and lots of walking, you can lead a normal life even with chemo. Then again, it is important that work gives you more energy than it costs you. What would you do? Carry on working or call in 100% sick straight away? If you choose the former, then you know you have inspiring work that gives you satisfaction. In this very personal keynote, I tell you more about the conditions for a powerful mindset.

03. About Ariane

“Surely it’s much cooler to help build the future than to let it happen to you?”

Ariane Roos graduated as an aerospace engineer, worked for a long time at a strategic level in the business world, wrote a book and is now a partner in a consultancy for ‘Business for Good’.

The sky is the limit’ is sometimes said, but as far as Ariane Roos is concerned, it could all be a bit less in our growth- and consumption-driven society.

Inspired by Wubbo Ockels, the first Dutchman to go into space, Ariane studied Aerospace Engineering at TU Delft.

In the following years, she worked in various positions in business development, sales, and marketing for several large companies such as KPN, Fokker, Vodafone, and Philips. During her time at KPN – on the eve of what would one day become the internet – she saw an opportunity, together with a colleague, to develop their own platform where content could be sent encrypted: DMDsecure. This was a pioneering idea at a time when delivering a product online was still seen as quite exciting by companies.

“We entered into partnerships with big players like Microsoft and Adobe. During that time, I learnt to speak ‘strategy language’.”

After selling the company, Ariane decided to go back to her ‘roots’ and joined Fokker. As marketing manager, as sales manager and later as Director Proposals and Estimating, she got to know the company inside and out. She spoke both the language of engineers and the strategy language of senior management. It struck her that ambiguity and misunderstanding often arise where people from different departments get ‘lost in translation’. Later, in her role as Head of Sales at Vodafone, she discovered the same ‘gap‘ between sales and the people behind the scenes.

She took her experiences and talent for connecting everyone, every team, to the same mission to Philips, where she worked for several years. This talent, her social commitment and a profound personal experience eventually led her to Synergie; a consultancy that helps people in organizations turn their company into an impact organization.

She is also the author of the book “En nu dan?” (And now what?”), which responds to the question “I know what my personal purpose, my mission is, but how to proceed?”. It offers perspective and helps you develop a strategy in a language that everyone understands.

“A seemingly simple strategy can be complex, whether you are running a bank or a zoo. But everyone, from administrative assistant, to cleaner, to manager, needs to understand the mission and their own role in it.”

Ariane Roos is also an experienced (keynote) speaker and regularly speaks on “Doing Business for Good!”, why it is important and how you can get started right away.

04. Purpose

"Everyone, from managers to cleaners, needs to understand the organization’s mission and their own role in it."

Ariane Roos | Speakers for Good

"We decide for ourselves what we consider normal; we are never too old to learn and adjust our conceptions!"

Ariane Roos

What about now?

“En nu dan?” (And now what?”) is the title of her book published in 2023 and the question Ariane Roos asked herself when she was diagnosed with breast cancer in early 2023. The advice to pursue chemotherapy despite successful surgery and radiotherapy still threw her into an impossible dilemma.

“What if I don’t do it and it comes back? What if I do it and it also comes back and in doing so, I have ‘thrown away’ a year of my life? A year in which I can live my life, meaningfully.”

She decided that she would do both; to the best of her ability, not feel sick, and still go to work between treatments. This gave her energy, not entirely due to the work as such but mostly due to its nature – social issues with a higher purpose.

“I have never heard anyone say that they jump out of bed in the morning full of enthusiasm with the goal of creating even more value for shareholders. Working on the energy transition, making sure farmers get a fair wage, fighting global warming, plastic soup, and food waste; these are things that drive people. And so do I.”

Or, as she expresses evocatively in her lectures: “Would you rather help build Jeff Bezos’ private yacht or an Ocean Cleanup ship?”

With Synergie and as a speaker, she wants to convince people in organizations to use their talent and power ‘for good’, and that can mean radical change. Through the lens of an engineer, Ariane sees technology as an important factor in the transition to a more sustainable, fairer world. But a bringing about a new collective vision is also essential: the vision in which we see well-being as a much better social measure than financial prosperity. The irrepressible human drive for growth is still mainly focused on this, and thus on consumption with all its consequences.

“How bizarre is it that we find it normal to wear cheap jeans sewn together by Uighurs in ‘re-education camps’? Or that migrant workers live with 30 people in one house and work underpaid in slaughterhouses. We don’t see it or don’t want to see it.”

In line with Milton Friedmans thinking “A growing economy as the solution to everything, at all costs?” The answer to that is a loud “no” if you ask Ariane. As far as she is concerned, we could even shrink a little, settle for less and revalue what is already there. And who knows, in the end, less might even bring us more. More attention, more satisfaction, more connection, and happiness.

05. USPs

Why should you collaborate with Ariane Roos for your upcoming event?

1. Persuasion

Ariane is convinced: it can be done! She already shown in her book that any organization can be an impact organization and she firmly share this conviction on stage – as a (keynote) speaker, interviewer, chairperson, or workshop facilitator.

2. Fun

A quote she regularly ‘borrows’ from Tristram Stuart, food waste activist, is “If you want to save the planet, you have to throw a better party than the ones destroying it”. And there’s something to that; how do you convince the skeptics, cynics who only associate sustainability with expense, and sacrificing everything that makes life fun? Ariane gives a sneak preview in advance.

3. Inspiration

Although her message has a sharp edge, the future perspective she outlines is hopeful. She inspires and activates people and organizations to take steps towards a sustainable and fair society. Ariane shares eloquent and recognizable real-life examples and immediately provides practical tools to make the change to ‘doing business for good!’.

4. Vulnerable

Her personal story about her illness does not leave you unaffected. She tells it because it shows that as human beings, we can all gain strength from doing something that gives satisfaction and meaning.

5. Approachable

Ariane’s message can be targeted to any group, because really anyone who will do something good (or better) for people and the planet is valuable. As far as she is concerned, this also applies to organizations. “What matters to me is that the right intention is there, not how well you are already doing,” she says. After all, you have to start somewhere.

06. For Good Interview

Four questions for:
Ariane Roos

For Good: what does it mean to you?

“Doing good for people and planet, something that sometimes seems at odds with each other, because simply not everyone can afford sustainable and healthy choices. I therefore believe in both better wealth distribution and sustainability. As far as I am concerned, the highest income in an organization should be a maximum factor of 10 compared to the lowest salary.

For me, business for good is about people and nature. Incidentally, it is strange that we make this distinction, because as humans we are nature. Although we seem to have forgotten that a bit.”

Walk the Talk: what is your added value?

“I speak the different ‘languages’ of an organization and am good at making connections between them. As a result, I also easily tailor my message as a speaker to my audience. Moreover, I have a wealth of experience and draw on practical examples that evoke instant recognition in people, at whatever layer of the organization they work.”

Do you have a role model or source of inspiration yourself?

“Wubbo Ockels’, legacy still inspires people, and me too. He could make clear like no other how fragile the ecosystem we call our earth is. A tiny ball in the universe, with a thin layer of atmosphere that protects us from the sun’s immense radiation. We have to be careful of that.”

What do you hope to achieve with your audience?

“During each lecture, I obviously hope to inspire as many people as possible to make the turn to business for good with their organization. I am very happy even if   I only reach a few people who then start making an impact.

I also truly believe that people can change; you are never too old to learn and adjust your views. For instance, I have completely adjusted the image I had of second-hand clothes. Buying second-hand has become normalized, partly due to the advent of a platform like Vinted. I now only buy second-hand clothes. What we consider normal we decide for ourselves, just like the future. You can let it happen to you, but you can also help build a brighter future, which is cool, right?”
