01. About Ankie

“A truly sustainable business model requires radical thinking, but it is possible”

Ankie van Wersch is a business person, pioneer and do-gooder. She believes in doing good, always.

Ankie van Wersch doesn’t know other than that in her grandparents’ North Limburg farmhouse there is a painting of the Flower Market in Amsterdam. One day, she asks about this, as both grandparents never showed any particular interest in the capital. The painting was a gift; the last possession of a Jewish person in hiding. “So my grandfather is a hero? I want to become one too,” Ankie responds. But her family sees it differently; it has nothing to do with heroism; the bottom line is that everyone, no matter what, should always do the right thing. The painting is a vivid reminder of this.

As a teenager, Ankie studied in Maastricht and in the USA, where she also started her career. The beginning of a flourishing career with various international, leading organisations. During a sabbatical, she travels to Nepal. The people and her experiences there leave a deep impression. It inspires her to found Tika foundation in 2006, which so far has already helped roughly 1,000 Nepali children a year with food, education and shelter. It started as a hobby, perhaps unconsciously driven by the words – ‘always doing the right thing’?

Ankie has since been hooking up with various civil society organisations more often as a board member and chairperson. National and international organisations that have issues such as education, equality for girls and women and climate change high on their agenda, among others.

“During the day, I talked with my head; about cost savings. In the evenings, I talked with my heart; for example, about the importance of education for children. Suddenly I wondered what I was actually doing in that hard business world.”

Then Enviu came her way, an organisation focused on accelerating system change by building future-proof business models. This is where her business insight and her drive to make the world a more beautiful place come together in a special way. In 2016, she became CEO of Enviu and, together with her co-CEO, she helped sharpen the organisation’s strategy and increase its impact. Since 2023, she has been part of Paul Polman’s IMAGINE leaders cohort. A group of business leaders who want to change the current economic system to one that does good.

"Doing good is not the same as doing nothing bad"

Ankie van Wersch

Children with malnourished bellies and rivers with the colour of the latest fashion

During her time in Nepal – at the time of a civil war – Ankie saw for the first time first-hand what life can be like when your cradle is in another part of the world.

In an orphanage, reeking of urine, 35 children were playing in one little room. In one corner sat a little boy, Susil, ignored by the others. When I went to see him, I found he spoke English well and was very intelligent. He had dreams for the future, but thought no one saw him or that he was worth it. Susil is my inspiration for founding Tika Foundation. He is now studying.

Ankie has seen many children grow under the personal attention they receive in Tika’s programmes. But that there is still much more to do in the world becomes clear to her again and again through great contrasts. The consequences of our way of life; rivers stained by textile dyes, mountains of discarded fast fashion in which rats live.

My team in Kenya saw a pile of rotting avocados one morning in Kenya and the same day a little further away children with fat bellies from malnutrition. We are wasting food in the same country where children are still dying of hunger. How is that possible?”

Such intense experiences provoke outrage, but can give way to action through her involvement with Enviu. What strikes her is that sexy brands and initiatives are often cited for inspiration, while the biggest impact can be made in infrastructures and the first links of the production chain. With Enviu, she looks at where innovation is needed, where there are systemic flaws that you cannot solve on your own as an entrepreneur; problems overlooked by others.

We have reduced avocado waste by 95%, saved billions of litres of water and created jobs in the garment industry. We also prevented 25 million single-use plastics from ending up in the ocean. We have also started a pension fund in Ghana, allowing people without formal jobs to build something for later.

According to Ankie, a business model must satisfy a few things. It must work for the benefit of people as well as the planet, but it must also have a good earning model attached to it, different from the traditional one.

During her lectures, Ankie visualises the opportunities that exist for companies. Getting rid of ‘ifs and buts’, using the lessons she learned as a pioneer.

03. USPs

Why should you invite Ankie van Wersch as a speaker for your event?

1. Positive

In Ankie’s lectures, a positive tone prevails. She explains in a well-founded and inspiring way that it can be done; as a company, making a positive impact on the environment and people’s lives. ‘Thinking big and starting small‘ is her motto.

2. Practical

Inspiration is one thing, but how can you start to change something in your organisation yourself? Preferably today? Ankie shares her insights and experiences with the audience and provides simple examples and tools to take a first step towards a sustainable and impactful business model. Her lectures always match the audience.

3. Connection

Embracing failure. Nothing human is foreign to Ankie; in her view, daring to make mistakes is inherent to personal development and the successes you achieve, in any field. In an all-around mission like Ankie’s, namely to create a more beautiful world, it is necessary to share those mistakes with others she says.

4. Storytelling

Ankie has a gift for striking a sensitive nerve with her stories and grabbing her audience’s attention instantly. Painful, poignant even, but also hopeful and heartwarming. The stories she explains in such detail reverberate in the minds of the audience for a long time.

5. Encouraging

One of the statements that appeals to Ankie is ‘If you want to see change, stop fighting the old, but start building the new’.

This statement flows seamlessly into the message she preaches in her lectures, namely that it really is possible to create a new economy that adds value to people and the environment. But to do so, we will have to start think differently. She talks about the wealth of possibilities that already exist.

05. For Good Interview

Four questions for:
Ankie van Wersch

Ankie van Wersch | Speakers for Good

For Good: what does it mean to you?

“Doing something good for the world has always driven me. I am lucky to come from a loving family and have the resources and opportunities to do this on a larger scale. Still, anyone can leave something good, something positive, by getting involved in something. Whether that is the environment or something else, every human being has a talent with which you can make the world a more beautiful place.”

Walk the Talk: what is your added value?

“I deliver my story with sensitivity, talk about what an experience did to me. That really touch people. That is also the intention, because then they open up to change. I am also not one for ‘rose-tinted stories’; if you dream and act big you will make mistakes. Some self-mockery is fortunately not foreign to me; vulnerability and humour work together. Moreover, I hope that others learn from those mistakes so that they can initiate their own systemic change faster.

We once founded a company that offered healthy, affordable meals in the slums of Nairobi and India. Everything was right; the maths, the nutritional values, the distribution channels. Everything except… the taste. The meals were not tasty. The intention was good but the quality was not, and we intervened too late. At the relaunch, we got a well-known TV chef involved to put things right.”

Who is your great example or inspiration?

“Of course, I could start listing all kinds of great thinkers and philanthropists, but my great examples are the Nepalese orphans I have had the pleasure of getting to know. Forgotten, malnourished, traumatised, and full of dreams that they make come true if only given the chance. A great example is Dhanraj Barkote. He lived on the streets of a village in Nepal and is now a director whose films about his homeland have won awards at various film festivals. Or Gita Rana, once disowned by her family after the death of her mother, she is now a gynaecologist. Both were once given a place in our programme at Tika foundation.”

What makes you happy in your personal life?

“Besides my work for Enviu, I am chairman of the Supervisory Board of Simavi and a board member of Pro2 (the first compensation fund for Nepalese migrant workers in Qatar).

Apart from that, I am also just a mother of three children. With the youngest I like to go to football matches, with the middle one I binge-watch romantic series and with the oldest one I have a great time philosophising – we solve world problems over dinner! Furthermore, I greatly enjoy receiving family and friends at home, having a nice meal together.”
